metamerism MR2 moods
About this project
A petrol head client of ours was left with a problem when his 2000 Toyota MR2 Roadster Hardtop was abandoned by a restorer during his restoration project.
We were approached by the owner of the vehicle for assistance, so the vehicle was transported through to our premises incomplete.
We arranged for a full engine re-build utilizing the high-end components that had already been bought by the owner.
During the 2-year restoration project, ideas and designs for the vehicle wrapping was a constant evolution. However, the compact nature of the vehicle with its many contour curves and body lines lead to the idea that multiple tapered ‘pinstripes’ should be used to accent these features. The pinstripe effect suited the age of the car.
1. Theme: Metamerism, a phenomenon that occurs when two colors match under one type of lighting but not another. This peculiarity has to do with the relationship between light and color. We perceive color based on the way an object reflects light, and that perception is based on the light source. In colorimetry, metamerism is when two colors that are not actually the same color can appear the same under certain lighting conditions. This occurs because the colors have different spectral power distributions, which causes them to reflect contrasting wavelengths of light. In colorimetry there are 3 types of metamerism that have application here:
• Observer metamerism: Occurs when a pair of colors match for one observer, but not for a second observer.
• Illuminant metamerism: When two colors match under one light source but not under a different source.
• Geometric metamerism: When a pair of samples (usually textured) match under one illuminant and viewing angle, but no longer match when the angle of illumination or viewing angle changes.
2. Task: Designers and wrappers needed worked in unison to create, detail and position the wrap using body lines and contours to show the skill in the final application.
3. Material Base: Avery Dennison SW 900 – 805 Satin Silver Metallic. Use of metallic to enhance Metameric effect.
4. Visual Effects: Several shades of blue and purple UV digital print, along with patterns and lenses were used to simulate the effect.
5. Special Effects on Metallic Vinyl: A shade changing color print was achieved using UV ink onto the metallic vinyl.
6. Material Full Overlay: Avery Dennison MPI 1480z matt overlay.
7. Special Effects to Matt Lam: UV printed tattoo laid down on top of the Avery Dennison MPI 1480z. With the design fade being printed as a 6 pass UV print – once on the bonnet, twice on the roof and three times on the trunk, creating an embossed velvet effect.
8. Material Part Overlay: Avery Dennison MPI 1460z gloss overlay. (Gloss laminate stripes were placed between the matt color stripes to enhance them and show the flow and movement of the design.)
9. Extras: Gold mags and carbon fiber trim add to the sporty design.
